IN A FRAME OF POWER (2010)
This is one of the images from my final brief of my first year at WSA. We were asked to produce an A5 hardback bound book in response to the word ‘Transition’.
I wanted to produce an artists book of portraits of typical people in their element. People pictured displaying the ‘thing’ that gives them a powerful frame of mind, inside a physical frame on a white background along with a quote from them.

A selection of images taken as part of my Documentary/Reportage brief for uni. We could only use 7-9 images over 3 double spreads to create a reportage on a subject of our choice.

After shooting and talking to some of the traders at Winchesters produce market, a Bakers (The town mill bakery, Hook) agreed to let me come and shoot some pictures whilst the bread was being made. I shot from 9pm-12am, until I ran out of film (Ilford HP5).

I had always thought bread was made early in the morning, but it turns out it’s made during the night, then left to cool before it is taken to market in the morning. I couldn’t believe it was just one mans job to make the entire days batch aswell.

Definitely the best bread I have ever tasted, especially still warm from the oven!

If you want to see any of these images more clearly, they are all available on my flickr set.

The first year of Uni is over already, so hopefully I might have time to update this blog.

I’ll start with this slightly cheesy slideshow of images I took whilst on the Graphic Arts Barcelona trip with the Winchester School of Art (WSA) back in March. Unusually for me, none of these images have been touched up or even cropped, they are merely the low quality jpegs I shoot alongside RAW for quick preview. Anyway, enjoy!

This is Sam, shot for Renaissance. WIth this shot I really tried to focus on producing some deep black & white tones. Digital black & white never quite looks as good as film but i’m fairly pleased with this result.

Another shot of Lucy for Renaissance.  I took these before Christmas time but with uni work i’ve only just had time to focus on them!

An updated team photo for Renaissance hair. It was quite hard to fit everybody in whilst making sure I didn’t go so wide that I include distracting background elements. For this shot I had to stand on a chair and use the floor as the background.

Another shot of Olivia from the same roll of film as the last one. This was shot at the Church opposite the uni campus, the light was near perfect that afternoon.Still loving the B&W tones of 35mm. I have so many shots I still haven’t had time to take a closer look at. Still, I suppose i’ve always got something to do on a rainy day.

This is a more conceptual self portrait. The gas mask is supposed to show how suffocating trying to look good and fashion itself can be. Again, I didn’t use this for the brief as the concept isn’t as strong in this shot as some others, however these two are possibly my own personal favourites from the set anyway.

This is a tribute to Richard Avedons work from his collection “In the American West”. This isn’t one I used for my project as I felt it was more conceptual than documentary but not conceptual enough to send a clear message.
